Pennies for Patients with an Auburn Twist
Pennies for Patients with an Auburn Twist.
www.penniesforpatients.org

An Auburn tradition, “The Penny War,” is a class competition for a cause! The cause chosen for this year was “Pennies for Patients” which benefits those battling Leukemia and Lymphoma. Treatment for Leukemia and Lymphoma (cancers of the blood) are very expensive, often including spinal taps, tests, chemo, surgery, and medications. Money towards researching a cure is a great need as well.

The Penny War works like this: each class has a bucket where they collect pennies. Each penny is worth 1 point. However, you can sabotage other classes by putting dollar bills and other non-penny coins in their buckets. For example, if a dime is found in the bucket, that class goes down 10 points. The objective is to have positive points by the end of the competition and see who can get the most points.

This year, the Juniors were the winning class with -4,850 points, but the Freshman raised the most money as the “losing” class with -12,712 points. We raised a total of $933.35 for “Pennies for Patients.” Thank you so much for your support!

World Vision's 30 Hour Famine Event at Auburn

www.30hourfamine.org

This year, Auburn Adventist Academy is participating in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine on February 24-February 25. World Vision is a well-respected Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. (www.worldvision.org) As a way to raise awareness with teens, World Visions has developed the 30 Hour Famine program to engage students in fighting against injustices and opening up their eyes to compassion.

Here is a description of the event from www.30hourfamine.org:

"The Famine is your chance to join other groups of students all over the world in learning the truth about hunger, poverty, and injustice — then overcome it all with love. Worldwide, 925 million people are hungry. Every day, as many as 11,000 children under age 5 die due to hunger-related causes. That’s one kid every 8 seconds. The Famine gives your group a chance to do something about it — to rise up and serve the hungry.

Going hungry — so others don’t have to

Every year, hundreds of thousands of students do the Famine. They go without food for 30 hours. They learn what it takes to overcome hunger. And they raise funds to help feed hungry children and families around they world. They refuse to be told they can’t make a difference. Every $30 raised by your group can help feed and care for a child for a month. And because the Famine is powered by World Vision, you’re not just feeding kids for today — you’re helping them and their families overcome poverty for a lifetime."

If you would like to support a student participating in the 30 Hour Famine, please email campus.ministries@auburn.org or call 253.351.9806 ext. 229.
